About the Annual School Recycling Conference:
The School Recycling Conference is held in the spring and, in the past, was held on the second day of NRRA’s Annual Conference and Expo (the Conference within the Conference). Starting in 2020 (now 2021), the School Recycling Conference will run the full two days, offering our schools greater flexibility in scheduling. It is a celebration of all things reduced, reused and recycled!
The School Conference offers hands-on activities and workshops for teachers and students as well as exhibit hall time to talk to vendors from the recycling industry. Over the last few years we have offered workshops on current recycling topics such as composting, Earth Day activities, implementing school recycling programs, Vermont’s TRY teams, green cleaning, introducing new recycling curricula, eliminating food waste, textile recycling, how nature recycles, ocean plastics and many more timely topics.
Over the years, we have offered interactive activities such as the Energy Bike, Compost Crane and Recycling Pinball. One year we wove bracelets using plastic lids. We have offered a Recycling Obstacle Course and a Scavenger Hunt. We have even held a mini-Trash On the Lawn Day (TOLD) where we sort the waste generated by the Conference. Every year we try to offer new workshops and activities along with our “tried and true” programs.
Our Conference is capped off by our School Recycling Awards Luncheon (usually on the second day of the Conference) where we recognize students, schools, recycling clubs, teachers and facilities staff who are making a difference. We even had our first student keynote speaker in 2017!
